What to Expect at Your First Therapy Session

What to Expect at Your First Therapy Session

If you’ve never participated in a therapy session, you may be a bit nervous about it. What will we talk about? Do I have to open up right away? Will they ask me about my fears? We’re sure many questions are running through your mind.

While every therapist is different and might do things differently, at IntegrityMind Psychiatry, we offer Holistic Help for the Whole You. But what does that really mean? A holistic approach to mental health factors in lifestyle, environment, sleep habits, diet and exercise as much as it considers experiences, trauma, diagnoses and symptoms of mental illness.

Your First Session

Your first session at IntegrityMind will be you and Dr. Wright getting to know each other. Some may call his approach “old-fashioned,” meaning his care feels like what you would have gotten decades ago. He takes the time and asks the questions required to dig deeply into the issue at hand. Of course you want to have a good connection with your therapist.

Some questions to expect in your first session include:

  • Is this your first-ever therapy session?
  • Do you have any diagnosed mental health issues in your family?
  • What do you hope to get out of this?
  • What would you like to accomplish in your sessions?

You can also ask your therapist questions such as “how long will each session last?” or “how many sessions do you think it will take to resolve my issue?” Dr. Wright is happy to answer any questions that may arise.

What to do After Your Session

We understand that there can often be many emotions felt after someone’s first therapy session. Be sure to check in with yourself to digest how everything went. Just remember that one session alone cannot cure anything, so be open-minded about the results and the time it takes. If you have made the decision that you would like to continue, you can schedule your next appointment.
